WSUMC’s Statement following
The United Methodist Postponed General Conference 2020 / General Conference 2024

There are moments in all of our lives that will forever define who we are. The vote by the General Conference to remove exclusive language around gender and sexuality from The United Methodist Book of Discipline is one such moment. This decision, which passed with overwhelming support, is one that many have been waiting to see take place for years, even decades. Many thought this day would never come. We recognize and lament the reality that previous General Conference decisions inserted provisions into church law that have done great harm to a group of people made in the image of God and called by God to ministry. We are grateful for those who courageously chose to remain a part of this community and to engage in the prayerful and difficult work that has led us to this new day.

As a congregation, we celebrate that the United Methodist Church has removed these restrictive and harmful provisions. With joy, we willingly embrace all the rights and privileges allowed by these changes including the ability to host and officiate at same-gender unions. We are grateful that the wording in the Book of Discipline is now written in a way that includes and welcomes all people, whether they characterize themselves as progressive, centrist, or traditionalist. As we enter into this new season for The United Methodist Church, may we remain one in union with Christ, sent forth to fulfill the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Adopted by the Church Council of Washington Street United Methodist Church on May 4, 2024
