Angela Powers serves as Washington Street’s Director of Music. She came to Washington Street in January 2011, upon the retirement of Arletta Raley who had served this congregation for 40 years.
Angela holds a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance and a Masters of Music Education from the University of South Carolina. At Carolina, Angela studied choral conducting under the late Dr. Arpad Darazs, opera under the direction of Dr. Donald Gray, and voice with Professors Gene Ferguson and Laurie Christie. She also served as Drum Major for the USC Band under the direction of Mr. James K. Copenhaver.
For the last 32 years, Angela has been a music teacher in Richland School District Two, serving at Forest Lake Elementary, Spring Valley High School, and Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary. Angela was named Richland Two District Teacher of the Year in 2000.
Before joining the staff at Washington Street, Angela had been a long-time member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. She served on the Music Staff and was a member of the Chancel Choir. She also previously served as Director of Music at Kathwood Baptist Church and Eason Memorial Baptist Church. Angela is married to Dr. Davis Powers, III, and they have one son, Layton Davis Powers. She is the daughter of Lee and Ted Wydham of Greenwood, South Carolina. She received her early musical training in the choirs of First Baptist Church of Greenwood with directors, Edgar Davis and Ann Arrington.
