Week 1: A Christmas Carol
Advent Candle: Hope
Sermon Title: From Humbug to Hope
“In the absence of joy, God sends hope.” Ebenezer Scrooge lived proudly without joy. Amassing wealth was his only goal, with no interest in helping those around him. “Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster.” But hope for Mr. Scrooge was never lost, and after seeing the error of his ways (and a glimpse into what the future could hold) he embraced truly living life. Joy returned to Mr. Scrooge, and he spread that joy to those around him. Sharing his bounty with others became the “new norm” for him, multiplying his joy beyond what he could see or know.
Question for reflection: How can we shape this Advent Season so it prepares us to receive Christ anew, rather than prepare us for Christmas morning?
